Defenders of Monstro City Launching Soon

August 18, 2021

Issue #1 of Defenders of Monstro City is scheduled for launch on September 18! The campaign has been approved and the Pre-launch Page is up on Kickstarter. To make sure you don’t miss it, click on the “Notify Me” button on the page. It will ask you to create a Username and Password or sign in using an Apple ID or Facebook.

This comic book is the first of a three-issue series. It’s a 28-page comic book suitable for all ages. The best way I can describe it is by saying it’s a “silly monster comic with heart.”

There are two covers to choose from. The Standard cover which features the whole monster team in an iconic, dynamic pose with the imposing villain engulfing nearly the entire background with his presence. The variant cover is an homage to Justice League of America #119—one of my favorite comic books from my childhood. It’s not considered a key issue, but it’s very significant for the memories it brings to me.

The monsters aren’t superheroes with super powers, but they are heroic nonetheless. Looking on the surface, you would see a comic book with a lot of elements that are attractive to young readers who crave action, adventure and colorful characters. Beneath that obvious exterior, the story also deals directly with or hints at problems in society like greed, corruption and even coming-of-age issues with one of the young characters. When I was writing the story, I aimed for a balance between lighthearted fun and more thoughtful moments to give the characters depth allowing them to engage in life changing events as the story evolves.
Some of the quirkiness may remind you of cartoons like SpongeBob Squarepants and Adventure Time, while the “Team Feel” was inspired by “Justice League of America” stories from the Bronze Age.

In addition to the comic book, I’ll be offering bookmarks, prints, and original artwork from the comic. I’ll be sharing more about that in future posts!
